August 4, 2021 – DENTON – Texas Woman’s University students Ashley Elliot and Demetria Ober look forward to broadening their worldview with their recent award U.S. Department of State Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarships.

The scholarships will enable Elliot, an English student, to study abroad at Harlaxton College in England for the spring semester 2022 and Ober, a social work student, to study abroad at the Universidad de Granada in Spain for the 2021-2022 academic year.

Through the Harlaxton College Program, Elliot will stay with a host family in Grantham, England, study at Harlaxton College and learn about the local culture through tours led by teachers. When asked why she was interested in studying abroad, Elliot said that “studying abroad is important to my goals. I want to work in a field where information is very important. This opportunity will help me learn more about the English culture and people.

Demetria Ober

Through the International studies abroad program, Ober will study at the Universidad de Granada, which “has a great Spanish learning program and would be the first place in Europe to learn Spanish,” according to Ober. As a person with a disability, Ober “never imagined having enough courage to pursue something like study abroad. Growing up, I never had enough resources to experience anything other than school-related travel. I knew I wanted to break down these barriers by doing things my family could never have imagined. Ober added that she hopes to inspire future generations by “striving for things that are unexpected, but life-changing in a positive way.”
