President Muhammadu Buhari has said the new international terminal at Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos will create 3,000 direct and indirect jobs for young Nigerians.

Mr Buhari said this as he commissioned the new terminal Tuesday.

“This improvement will bring the airport’s operations and management services to approximately 14 million passengers per year. With a positive multiplier effect by creating 3,000 direct and indirect job opportunities for our youth,” Mr. Buhari said.

In addition, the president said the terminal will increase the influx of foreign direct investment and exponential growth in domestic product (GDP).

According to the Nigeria Bureau of Statistics (NBS), unemployment in Nigeria increased from 27.10% in the second quarter of 2020 to 33.30% in the fourth quarter of 2020.

However, in the long term, the unemployment rate in the country is projected tend towards 32.00% in 2022 and 30.00% in 2023.

“Growth and Development”

Mr Buhari said his government had been “deliberate and consistent in identifying and investing in critical projects that will improve the standard of living of our people and contribute immensely to our growth and the development of our nation”.

“Our investments in interstate rail connectivity, highways, agriculture, power and telecommunications, to name a few, have been unprecedented,” he said.

He said his administration was prioritizing the completion of five new international airport terminals, which were at 11% completion when he took office in 2015.

“We have also complemented these robust initiatives with sophisticated physical policies to drive the aviation infrastructure. These included the designation of four airports; Lagos, Abuja, Kano and Portharcourt as free trade zones in which customs duties are not applicable, the removal of VAT on all forms of shared transport, including air transport and the exemption of aircraft commercial and spare parts from the payment of VAT,” Mr. Buhari said.
