A scout group from Maryport will be one of the first in the UK to launch a Squirrel group.
The twosd Maryport Scout Group is offering children ages 4-6 the chance to join the new early years section of the Beaver, Cubs, Boy Scouts and Explorers Scout Family.
The Boy Scouts are the largest co-ed youth organization in the world and have been around since 1907, so the movement knows a lot about working with children of all ages.
This is the first newly launched section in the past 35 years and in March 2022 the Maryport Group will be ready to open its doors and meet potential members.
A spokesperson for 2sd Maryport Scout Group said: “Children have so many reasons to join, as squirrels give young children the chance to make friends, have fun outdoors, learn new things and win. badges through fun activities.
“The children who join wear a red sweatshirt uniform and the group’s scarf.
“The badges that can be earned are: Be Active, Be Creative, Celebrate, Experience Exciting, Feel Good, and Story Time.
“It’s the best of Scouts and what we do best – learning by doing and entering the great outdoors – combined with early childhood best practices in storytelling, routine and play.
“Like all of our chapters, Squirrels helps young people learn life skills – with an emphasis on the outdoors.”
Bear Grylls, the Boy Scout Leader, said: “We help young people get the best possible start in their early years. “
The Maryport Group expects a very high demand for places in their Drey and encourages interested parents to send their child’s name, date of birth and address to: [email protected] as soon as possible because places should be taken quickly.
A spokesperson for the Maryport Group said: “We cannot organize all of this on our own and we are looking for help from anyone who can help us.
“If you are already working in early childhood, please contact us for more information. Even if you don’t, we realize you might be interested and full and appropriate training will be given if needed.
“When you volunteer, it’s good for you and the community, while adults can learn skills for the future, both personally and in the workplace.
“This is the opportunity to spend time with your own children (who are members) or to gain experience working with younger children. “
Nominations will be subject to satisfactory enhanced DBS controls and appropriate training.
