BOTEtourt COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – On Monday, Botetourt County officials announced that all winter recreation league activities, including basketball, will not take place this year.
The decision comes from a continued increase in COVID-19 cases regionally and nationally.
Youth basketball relies mainly on school gymnasiums. County and school officials agreed that opening up indoor facilities to recreation programs would pose too great a risk to the health of recreation program participants, school staff and students.
“It’s a sad day for all of us as 2020 wreaks havoc on yet another sporting season. While youth sports offer clear benefits to children and communities across the county, the risk of disease transmission simply remains. too high for winter sports. Schools have taken the appropriate step of limiting gymnasium use to ensure that they can focus on educating our children in as safe an environment as possible. decision, although incredibly difficult, is the right thing to do.
